Most new construction or renovation projects will require an FD plan review and approvals. The Fire Marshal will conduct inspections throughout the duration of the project.

Construction Fire Safety Requirements
A Construction Fire Safety Requirements document must be filled out and sent with the plan for approval for everything except minor plat reviews. Any questions regarding reviews and inspections should be directed to Stephen DunLany, Fire Marshal, STMFD at (502) 895-7825.

Plan review fees are due with the submission of all plans. Fees will not be invoiced. They will not be mailed unless prior arrangements have been made to cover the cost of mailing. Once plans have been submitted and fees have been received, you will be contacted by the Fire Marshal to let you know the review process has begun.
Knox Key Box Order
St Matthews Fire & EMS, along with almost every other agency in Louisville Metro, use Knox Key Safes for rapid entry. This system provides a safe and secure way for business and residents to provide emergency responders access to their properties. The key and lock are registered to the FD and only fire personnel have access to the specially designed key. The building owner will purchase and install the key safe in a location agreed upon by the FD. Once installed the owner will contact our Fire Marshal and we will come by and lock your building keys in the box.
In the event of an emergency the special key on the fire apparatus will be used to open the box and to retrieve the building key. To obtain a key safe, go to www.knoxbox.com and Commercial and multifamily owner should go with a version of the Knoxbox safe. If your would like to try to use a different option than the Knoxbox please coordinate with the Fire Marshal to make sure it integrates with our key system.

- Select “Buy Now” from the bottom of the page, you will then select Kentucky as the state and St Matthews FPD as the agency.
- Once you select your Knoxbox commercial safe, go through the purchase process and coordinate with the Fire Marshal for the best location to install it when it arrives.
- After installation contact our Fire Marshal at (502) 893-7825, option 2 to have your keys placed in the safe.

These are the requirements for the Firefighter Safety Building Marking System that are installed in the St Matthews Fire and EMS District. Marking systems should be installed on all commercial properties designated by the Fire Marshal and meet the guideline outlined by NFPA and the St Matthews Fire Prevention Division. The marking provides firefighters with information about the building construction and contents. Signs should be posted clearly visible upon approach of the structure, 6 to 8 feet off the ground or near the Knox Box keysafe.
